Workshop Description

The Entomology Department at the San Diego Natural History Museum will provide a thorough overview of bumble bees (Bombus spp.) native to southern California. We will review species of bumble bees that occur within the northern portion of The Nat’s mission region, which begins at Point Conception and ends at the US-Mexico border. Special attention will be given to Crotch’s bumble bee (B. crotchii), which is currently a candidate for listing as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act, and Morrison bumble bee (B. morrisoni), which is currently being considered for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act. Participants will learn about the basic morphology, life history, identification, and differentiation of the bumble bee species by way of lecture and study of the museum’s bumble bee specimens. Host plant associations, survey protocols, and permitting requirements for Crotch’s bumble bee will also be reviewed. The day will end with an identification quiz and time for discussion.

This workshop also comes with return access to our bumble bee study specimens for six months following the workshop. Advance scheduling will be required for any study specimen visit; details will be provided during the workshop.
