Training Overview: 

Hosted by the San Diego Conservation Planning Hub, the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Training: Dune Conservation for Resilient Communities will provide an overview of best practices for planning Dune NbS projects in San Diego County. The training will cover NbS basics, dune sites in the region, permitting, and plant selection for restoration projects. Participants will gain technical, regulatory, and planning skills needed to implement coastal dune restoration projects in San Diego County. The events are intended to strengthen long-term relationships, shared stewardship, and community capacity for climate resilience across the region. 

This full-day training will be hosted at the San Diego Natural History Museum from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. The morning learning exchange will feature a keynote presentation and an interactive fireside chat where participants will learn about the importance of dunes and their contribution to coastal resilience in San Diego. Additionally, the fireside chat will discuss the integral role that community engagement plays in protecting and restoring San Diego’s coastal spaces. The afternoon session will include a panel of technical stakeholders with expertise in native plants, historic distribution of coastal dunes, monitoring, and permitting. This will give participants an opportunity to learn about topics that will be key to writing a successful NbS restoration plan for their given dune site. The training will conclude with a hands-on engagement activity. A rooftop luncheon and coffee breaks will be provided to support a welcoming and accessible experience for all participants.

Who will be in attendance? 

The main audience will be members of the Nat’s Subplan Writing Teams. These team members include a diverse, interdisciplinary mix of the following (approx. 70 people):  

  • Community members who bring lived experience and local knowledge of the area’s environmental conditions, priorities, and challenges.   

  • Practitioners from nonprofit organizations or consultancies with firsthand experience planning, implementing, and managing habitat restoration and resilience projects.  

  • Municipal and agency representatives, particularly those involved in climate adaptation, habitat conservation, coastal resilience, land use planning, or related decision-making processes.   

  • Site users, including individuals familiar with dune/canyon areas through recreation, cultural activities, community events, or regular users 

Training Learning Outcomes: 

The key Learning Outcomes of these trainings are as follows:  

  1. Illustrate the potential of Nature-based Solutions to support social and ecological outcomes within the context of restoration planning in coastal dune ecosystems.  

  1. Provide Subplan Writing Team Members with the opportunity to gain knowledge of site selection, permitting, ecological, and social processes needed to successfully plan a small-scale, community-driven restoration project. 

  1. Disseminate relevant and usable biodiversity knowledge from the San Diego Natural History Museum to local decision-makers, land managers, community members, and site users.  

  1. Strengthen long-term relationships, shared stewardship, and community capacity for climate and coastal resilience across the region.

You will receive an email confirming your spot at the NbS training. You will also receive an email with your e-tickets. You will not need your e-tickets and can ignore the second email.

Please be on the lookout for an additional email from your Subplan Writing Team Lead (Climate Resilience Fellow) for a pre-training survey. Everybody attending the training is required to complete the survey prior to the training date. Parking:

Earlier this year, the City of San Diego introduced paid parking throughout the Park from 8 AM-6 PM.

If you are a registered San Diego City Resident, you can go to the online portal, and register your vehicle for a fee of $5. This must be done 48 hours in advance. Once verified, San Diego City residents can then park for free in all of the Level 2 Lots, including: Pepper Grove (near the Fleet Science Center), Upper Inspiration Point, Marston Point, Federal, Palisades, and Bea Evenson.

If you are not a San Diego City Resident or are not able to register your vehicle in time, the first three hours at the Lower Inspiration Point lot are free. Or parking payments can be made at kiosks located throughout Balboa Park or through the ParkSmarter app. Thank you for your patience with us as we attempt to navigate this new system. The parking is a changing situation and we are getting new guidance daily.
